Not even 20 years ago one could buy a brand new car for less than R100 000.

Not even 20 years ago one could buy a car for less than R100 000. These days you would have to browse through Carfind.co.za to find a suitable vehicle in that price range. Affordability has become a big challenge in the car market. However, there are still some good, affordable cars that one can look at. We compiled the following list for your reading pleasure:

BAIC B40 Plus TDi
Whilst the BAIC brand has been in South Africa for a few years now, it has not made a significant impact in the market. The B40 Plus is their first real attempt at a more premium market. B40 is well-equipped and priced right when compared to its nearest American rival.
Power: 110kW, 350Nm
Price: From R549 500

GWM P Series
One of the most sought-after bakkies in the country is shaking up the market, thanks to its massive size, exceptional interior quality, and real value for money. The GWM brand is no stranger to our country, having been selling its bakkie range here for a while. But the P Series is as good, or better than most of its rival at prices that the market is still getting used to.
Power: 120kW, 400Nm
Price: From R359 900 (s/c) and R389 900 (d/c)

Haval Jolion
With Haval now widely accepted by the buying public, Jolion is simply taking advantage of this brand equity and running with it. The car itself is a strong presence in its segment, challenging German, and Japanese class leaders in virtually all departments. Haval has highly specified this car and priced it out of competitors’ reach.
Power: 105kW, 210Nm
Price: From R309 900

Renault Triber
The country’s most reasonably-priced 7-seater is a sales hit and it is easy to see why. Whilst it lacks strength in performance, when it comes to interior space, infotainment and other features, the Triber is steps ahead. You will be hard pressed to find a more practical new vehicle for the price.
Power: 52kW, 96Nm
Price: From R193 400

Subaru Forester
This Japanese brand is often overlooked because it does not have a large marketing budget to scream at potential consumers. However, what it offers, specifically from the Forester point of view, has always been and remains quite impressive.
Power: 115kW, 196Nm
Price: From R486 000

Toyota Corolla Cross
Toyota’s latest super star got off to a pointy start late last year as the Corolla Cross sold over 1 700 units in December 2021, slightly above company projections. A shining example of bang for buck, the Corolla Cross is set to become a familiar sight on our roads for sure.
Power: 103kW, 172Nm
Price: From R349 900

Toyota Urban Cruiser
Once the Urban Cruiser entered the top 5 best-selling Passenger Cars list it became a permanent resident. Buyers have been responding to the Toyota promise of modern reliability, simple mobility and value for money.
Power: 77kW, 138Nm
Price: From R264 300

Volkswagen Polo Vivo
South Africa’s favourite Passenger Car keeps going from strength to strength. Its target market cannot get enough of it, probably because it offers them some level of performance thrill at prices that don’t break the bank. Plus it comes with what they would call “sweet” features.
Power: 55kW, 130Nm
Price: From R232 500
