The
XUV700 is for those looking for a cost effective offering that doesn't compromise on quality and technology. It is for those looking for a vehicle that can complement their professional and active lifestyle. We recently drove it at the national media launch. Here is what you need to know.
The
XUV700 (pronounced seven double oh) squares up against the likes of the
HAVAL H6 and the
Chery Tiggo 8. When first introduced, the
Mahindra was a relatively cheap alternative, and it
was cheap. Over the years the company has grown in terms of quality and inhouse development which can be seen in this latest product. The
XUV700 is a compelling offering so let’s take a closer look.
Styling
New from the ground up, the
XUV700 underpins a completely new platform for the brand that has set the direction for the
SUVs. The
XUV700 features advanced engineering and the latest technology in a relatively attractive package. The new, larger grille with the new
‘Twin-Peaks’ logo takes center stage, flanked by
LED C-shaped headlights. Along the side you will notice strong character lines and flush door handles, which give a premium look to the design. The rear features large twilight clusters and a neatly sculptured tailgate. The
XUV700 sits on 17-inch rims which complete the look.
Interior
Step inside and your eyes are drawn to the two high-definition 10.25inch digital screens for the digital cluster and infotainment systems. These take pride of place in the
Mahindra XUV700 cabin. The UI on these screens is highly customisable and allows for a detailed view of vehicle information. The graphics are clear and the system supports Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto.
Another nicety is the fact that the climate control functions are actual buttons and not some complex menu within the touchscreen. This makes usability much more efficient and effective. One issue however, is the fact that the interior colour is white, specifically on the seats. This can be problematic in terms of dirt, especially for those living an active lifestyle.
Leg and head room is commendable with the optional third row being ideal for children as adults might find it to be a bit cramped. The standard panoramic sunroof adds to the overall interior experience as does the relatively good fit and finish.
The top spec standouts
Mahindra has partnered with
SONY to customise the sound experience inside the
XUV700. In the flagship
AX7 L, the sound system is upgraded to a 12-speaker
SONY system with full immersive 3D sound. The
AX7 L also treats its owner with wireless charging and fully automatic electronic door handles. There is also a 360 degree camera with the ability to use the front camera as a dashcam.
Safety
7 is a sign of perfection when it comes to the
XUV700, with
7 airbags on the top variant; consisting of driver and passenger front airbags, curtains across all three rows, side airbags and a driver knee airbag. The vehicle also offers a host of driver aids such as Smart Pilot Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist and even Traffic Sign Recognition as standard.
Engine
At the heart of the
XUV700,
Mahindra has fitted a 2.0mStallion turbo-petrol engine, delivering exhilarating performance, 149kW and 380Nm of torque. All versions of the
XUV700 are fitted with
Mahindra’s smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic transmission. This transmission was remapped to match the power profile of the petrol engine at
South African cruising speeds.
The motor responds well however, we fear that the same issue that affects the Chinese offerings within the segment will affect the
Mahindra, and that is fuel consumption. The drive was brief, and the car fairly new, so an accurate fuel consumption reading was not entirely possible. That said, I did average around 9.0l/100km.
Final thoughts
The
XUV700 is a very compelling product that offers much for your hard earned money. The top-spec
AX7 L model is fitted with just about everything and yet carries a price tag of around R559 999 which is competitive and in our current economy, appealing. Is it worth consideration?
We think it is, especially when you factor in that the
Mahindra is sold with a comprehensive 5-year/100,000km service plan and a 5-year/150,000km mechanical warranty. A 24/7/365 Roadside Assistance Plan is included for the same period.
