Toyota South Africa Motors is one of the worst-affected companies regarding the recent deadly floods to hit the province of KwaZulu Natal. Production at Toyota’s Plant in Prospecton has been halted since the floods, with mop up and restoration activities taking centre stage. The place is the production point for several models including the new
Corolla Cross.
With these disturbances going on,
Toyota has not been able to fulfil any of its planned sales orders because there has not been
Corolla Cross production. Quite a pity, since the car has shot to one of the brand’s best-sellers after launching locally in November 2021. Regular monthly sales of over 1 500 have become commonplace with that badge.
I took the range-topping
Hybrid model for a test drive over a few days and found it to be a good package worthy of those sales numbers. Powered by a 90kW powertrain consisting of a petrol engine and an electric motor, the
Hybrid proved to be useful when it came to driving for many kilometres without having to fill up again. Over the course of 7 days it delivered a range of 750km under mixed conditions, including suburb, freeway and town driving. The ride itself is comfortable and the driver has a fairly commanding position, since this is an
SUV. The multifunction steering wheel is adjustable for height and reach, while the driver’s seat is also adjustable for slide and height.
Some of the standout features that occupants can enjoy include the advanced infotainment system with a touch screen, USB connection ports, Bluetooth connectivity, five comfortable seats, electric windows all around, dual zone air conditioning, cruise control, and the
Toyota Connect in-car WiFi system. I found the 440 litre boot more than adequate for daily use, and the rear seats do split 60/40 for added convenience.
