Isuzu mu-X
Shiny and all-new, the Isuzu mu-X is coming out blazing against its main competitors. The vehicle has grown not only in size but also in stature, with higher quality build materials inside and beneath. As one of the trusted 7-seater SUVs in the country, the mu-X now boasts a more powerful and frugal diesel engine producing 140kW and 450Nm, paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission, as well as a strong 4x4 system. Very little will stop this car.
Volkswagen Tiguan
One of South Africa’s favourite SUVs of the past six years has been redesigned and re-engineered. The Volkswagen Tiguan takes on big brother Touareg’s looks, and tones them down into a compact package. Boasting one of the most frugal petrol engines in the form of a 1.4-litre TSI (110kW, 250Nm), the Tiguan is comfortable, good-looking and technologically-advanced.
Toyota Corolla Cross
Built right here in Durban alongside siblings Hilux and Fortuner, the new Corolla Cross takes Toyota into a new era of manufacturing. One of the models is a Hybrid, which is a first for that manufacturing facility. Corolla Cross itself is spacious, sturdy and features the very latest technologies offered by the Japanese powerhouse, including a touch screen infotainment system with in-car Wi-Fi. Launched only a few weeks ago, this car is already a certified hit with the buyers.
Haval H6
Great Wall Motors is the owner of the Haval brand and they are here to shake up the market in a big way. Offering customers near full-house specifications on the H6 at highly competitive prices, Haval is taking the established brands by the horns. The H6 comes with a healthy 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine (150kW, 320Nm) and a DCT transmission, as well as AWD in some models. Space is ample and build quality is on par with its competitors.
Peugeot 2008
The French brand is now owned by the Stellantis group and their products just keep getting better. The 2008 is a real star in its segment. It looks stunning, both inside and out, is equipped with current features from front to rear, and drives like a hatch. All engines are powerful (up to 96kW) and relatively frugal, while interior space is good. This would be the supermodel of its class.
Land Rover Defender
A complete 180-degree change from the traditional Defender we all know and grew up with, the new car is modern in every aspect. And more. It is probably one of the best cars of any type to come out in the past year, thanks to a combination of attractive looks, an array of tech features, comfortable ride, extremely good off-road capabilities and a range of engine choices. Yes it is not the cheapest out there but it is certainly priced well within the segment.
Hyundai Venue
The Venue has been a surprise package in the sense that it is a Hyundai, and we don’t normally associate that brand with fun cars. Placed in a very busy market segment alongside highly competitive rivals, the Venue rises above it all by way of a range of trim options, two engine choices with up to 88kW, modern interior appointments and a really fun factor in driving. It is also priced nicely for its target market.
